Eczema

Symptoms

Caused by inflammation of the upper layers of the skin and presents as itchy, burning red spots or patches. It is can be found almost anywhere on the body, arms legs, etc. Eczema can be mild, with on a few small areas that are visible and cause mild discomfort, to severe where entire surfaces of the skin are affected and bleeding occurs.

Causes

Eczema can be caused by allergic reactions to wide range of products such as detergents, nickle and other irritants. It can also be non-allergic and the determining factors are harder to classify as a result.

Classifications

Atopic Eczema - families with asthma may be more more prone to this type. Itchy patches can be found on the head, neck and posterior aspects of the elbows and knees

Contact Dermatitis - Brought on by allergic reaction to chemical contact or harsh environment.

Seborrhoeic - Also known as cradle cap. This type of eczema is not known to be harmful and presents and dry crusty areas on the scalp or head particularly on the crown, eyebrows or forehead.

Xerotic - Usually occurs during the winter months when the air is the driest. The type is more common among the elderly.


Environment

Dust mite excrement may cause irritation leading to eczema outbreaks and as a result you may consider removing any old carpeting in your home. Simple vacuuming does not show a sizable change in the levels of dust mite irritants.
